Why Jesus? Have there not been many great teachers at different times throughout history? Certainly there have been. Yet we hold Jesus as someone different, someone above and beyond even the best of teachers humankind has ever produced.
Once sin was come into this world through the enemy, sin came with a cost. The wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). You must die for your sin. No matter how hard you try to not sin, you cannot maintain those efforts, because sin is as much a part of you as snatching ducks is to a retriever dog.
Its like standing before a judge in a courtroom after committing a crime. It does not matter how much good you have done in your community, the judge must demand a punishment to rectify the guilt of the crime.
So with sin. The punishment determined for sin is death.
As with our example with the courtroom judge, imagine you have been sentenced for your crime and are sitting in a prison cell. If another person came forth – one who had no sentence of his own – and paid your penalty, the court would release you because the sentence had been fulfilled. The time had been served or the fine had been paid. You are now free to go.
This is what Jesus did. He left the right hand of majesty on high
- and stepped into time that He created
- and put on frail humanity that He created
- and suffered extensively at the hands of man that He created
And why?
To set you free
- free from hopelessness – guilty with no hope of escaping punishment
- free from captivity – help by the enemy and held under sin and death
- free from sin – sin no longer has dominion over you
- free from torment – (Romans 7:15-19, 24)(Galatians 5:17-21)
There is no doubt – Jesus is different. He has accomplished for us more than any mere man could ever achieve because He is not merely man. Only man could pay for man’s sins, so as a man Jesus came and paid for the sins of man. But only God had the power to rescue man, so Jesus, because He is from God, powerfully set us free. This is why Jesus is the only way.
I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6
